Soprano Julie Ziavras will present an evening of Greek song by well known
and beloved Greek composers including Hadjidakis, Theodorakis, Xarchakos,
Markopoulos, Kouyioumtzis, and many others. A musical ensemble lead by
maestro Spiro Cardamis at the piano will include Aimilio Koumanis, bouzouki
and mandolin, Dimitris Kottarides, cello and Akis Sipsas classical guitar.
The concert will also feature the premiere a new song written by Spiro
for Julie's voice. The concert will take place under the stars in the courtyard of the Kastorio Highschool. Kastorio is a beautiful village with traditional stone houses, bakeries and taverns and panoramic views of the Taygetos Mountains. The concert is a part of the Summer Cultural Events of Kastori and is organized by the Municipality of Sparta's office of Culture and the Environment, the Kastori Local Council and the Cultural Association Polydeus. The concert is free and open to the public. |

Soprano Julie Ziavras will join the eminent Greek singer Yiannis Thomopoulos in a musical concert
celebrating the poet/lyricist Nikos Gatsos, with songs by Manos Hadjidakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Stavros Xarchoskos and others. The concert is accompanied by a musical ensemble with Aimilios Koumanis, bouzouki, mandolin, Vassilis Tzamouranis, bouzouki, Yiorgos Pantazopoulos, piano and the well known singer Yiannis Thomopoulos, who enjoys an extensive concert career and has a large

The concert on August 10 at 9:00 pm takes place in the school in the picturesque village of Akovos in the Taygetus mountains, located just north of Kalamata in the Peleponnese. The concert is free and open to the public. The concert on August 23 is organized by the Orpheus Society of Neo Skopos and is sponsored by the mayor of Neo Skopos Emmanouil Pappas. It takes place the opening night of a week long festival which includes dancing groups from various regions of Greece, theater groups, a musical tribute to the classical composer Nikos Astrinides (whose family was from Skopos in Eastern Thrace) and culminates in the Hagios Prodromos feast. Julie's grandmother was a Greek born in 1903 in the town of Skopos, located in Eastern Thrace, Turkey and was a survivor of the expulsion of the Greeks from the area in 1916, after which she emigrated to the US. Tickets for the concert are 5 euros and the proceeds go towards improvements to the Orpheus Heritage Hall located in Neo Skopos. The Hellenic Music Ensemble, The Harlem Blues and Havana Cuban groups share

The concert also features Alyson Williams, a well known Harlem Jazz and R & B recording artist and her ensemble and The Feeling Collective Band under the leadership of Miguel and Mariang Valdes, a dynamic group of extraordinary Cuban Musicians. The concert is sponsored by EMBCA, The Eastern Mediterranean Business Cultural Alliance (embca.com), whose mission is to promote the professional business, educational, artistic and cultural interests of Eastern Mediterranean Americans in conjunction with the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce in Partnership with Voza Rivers/New Heritage Theater Group. Julie Ziavras will peform a program of Greek songs commemorating the anniversary
of the October 12, 1944 liberation of Athens from the German Nazi occupation
forces during WWII hosted by the Athenians' Society of NY. Julie's program
will include well known songs of the WWII era and songs that were written
about the occupation and that celebrate the liberation of Athens on Oct.
12, 1944. The program includes patriotic songs originally sung by Sophia
Vembo and by Theodorakis, Leondis, Mavroudis and Tsitsanis, among other
prominent songwriters. She is accompanied by Spiros Cardamis, piano/synths
and Mike Stoupakis, bouzouki. The program, hosted by the Athenians' Society of NY, includes keynote speaker Andreas Karras of CUNY and rare, short historic documentary videos. A unique concert of musical bridge building with the Turkish International
Musical Ensemble sharing the stage with the Hellenic Rebetika Ensemble,
an authentic Greek rebetika ensemble led by Julie Ziavras vocalist/musical
director. Rebetika, the urban blues of Greece, is a synthesis of Greek
traditional music and Turkish Asia Minor cafe music whose emblematic instrument
is the bouzouki. The Hellenic Rebetika Ensemble will include Musical Director Julie Ziavras (vocals, guitar), Kostas Psarros (bouzouki/vocals), Mavrothis Kontanis (oud/vocals), Costas Baltazanis (guitar), Megan Gould (violin) and Steve Vavagiakis (hand percussion). The Turkish and International Music Ensemble, Inc. (TIME) is led by Nedim Katgi, Musical/Artistic Director and pianist. Soprano Julie Ziavras will perform for the ceremony to celebrate of the opening of the Spartan Museum at the outdoor ancient style amphitheater
The Alexander the Great Theater located at the main campus of the University of Connecticut. Afterwards she will perform Greek songs for the fundraising dinner dance reception held by the Pan-Laconian Society at the neighboring Center for Hellenic Studies "Paideia" of the University
of Connecticut. She will accompany herself on guitar, joined by Kostas Psarros, bouzouki
and Spiros Cardamis, keyboards. Julie's musical presentation for the ceremony will include works by the prominent Spartan composer Alekos Panayiotopoulos and a song written to the poetry of the great Spartan poet Nikiforos Vrettakos. The performance will take place at the Alexander the Great Theater, an all marble Classical styled outdoor amphitheatre that was recently completed with seats for over 700 spectators. It is the first authentic classical styled open air theater in America and is a depiction of the Ancient Greek theater of Epidavros with the orchestra, a two-story stage and a colonnade. The event will be attended by the archbishop and many dignitaries from Greece. For the dinner dance reception hosted by the Pan-Laconian Society, Julie will be joined by Spiros Cardamis on keyboard and Kostas Psarros, bouzouki to present Greek music from the region. The Hellenic Society "Paideia" is a non profit organization dedicated to educating students of all ages about the Hellenic Language and Culture. "Paideia" is the Greek word incorporating all the ideals of Classical Greece; education, instruction, discipline, culture, ideas, and citizenship. The "Paideia" Center features the Macedonia Educational Building, the Three Hieratchs Chapel and the Alexander the Great Theatre. The Macedonia Educational Building was opened in 1997 and includes multiple classrooms, several offices, student meeting rooms, a community hall, a library and an exhibit hall. The curriculum offers Greek language, culture and history with courses on Modern and Ancient Greek and Byzantine Language, History, Dance, Culinary Arts and study abroad programs to various locations in Greece throughout the year. Opened in 1995, the Three Hieratchs Chapel is the first and only Greek Orthodox Chapel inside an American State University and is built in authentic Byzantine order with its interior done by iconographers and mosaic artists from Greece. The new Spartan Museum will emphasize the history and contributions of the Spartans and greater Laconian Region. Soprano Julie Ziavras and tenor Ionas Artemou are accompanied by Glafkos Kontemeniotis, pianist, in a presentation of songs commemorating OXI Day. As special guest soloists, they will perform patriotic
songs from the WWII era, music by Theodorakis and others and a duet written
by Ionas Artemou called "Romiosini." This event presented by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater NY begins at 10:00 am at St. Catherine & George Orthodox Church (2230 33rd St, Astoria, NY) with the Doxology and Artoklasia. At 11:30 am a small Greek parade will head towards Stathakion Cultural Center where the celebration continues. At 12:30 the performances include traditional dancing with authentic costumes by the the Greek American Folklore Society, a musical presentation by the Theatrical Group of the Pancyprian Association directed by Leonidas Loizides and solo musical performances by Julie Ziavras and Ionas Artemou accompanied by Glafkos Kontemeniotis. This OXI Day celebration commemorates the day Greece said "No" and refused the Nazis ultimatum to surrender on October 28, 1940. Greeks are very proud of the pivotal role Greece played during WWII by defeating Italian dictator Benito Mousolini in the first Allied victory of WWII. OXI Day is a Greek National holiday celebrated every year on October 28. "Hence you will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks" (Winston Churchill) " Greece has set the example which every one of us must follow until the despoilers of freedom everywhere have been brought to their just doom." (F.D. Roosevelt) ADMISSION IS FREE and open to the public. The performances are followed by a food and beverage reception. This event will be well attended with many dignitaries, including ambassadors and consulates in attendance, so early seating is advised. |
